First and foremost, Spartan Speech is a club that was built by students for students. Our primary mission is to promote speech activities in the state of Michigan, which means promoting them here at the collegiate level too. Spartan Speech grows every year due to the welcoming of freshman students who once competed in our annual tournament.
If you are a speaker, actor, mentor, performer, writer, rhetorician, or simply have a genuine interest in public speaking: this is the perfect club for you. As a club we understand how busy college schedules are, so we like to suggest that you get involved only as much as you want to. No matter how you participate you will be awarded full-member status, but we feel you "get from Spartan Speech what you put into it".
There are plenty of ways you can get involved with what we do. Since we are a registered student organization, the sky is the limit with what kinds of activities we can participate in: collegiate tournaments, coaching workshops, banquets for high school state finalists, and so much more. All it takes is a little heart and elbow grease. As for more conventional involvement in the annual tournament, you can find that information below.
Outlined below are the many ways you can get involved in the tournament.
Anyone who is a Michigan State student is welcome to help plan our tournament. There is a lot of work that goes into planning this event. We need to account for food, awards, space, paper materials and so much more. It takes a real team to plan this event, and an even bigger team to smoothly operate it. The great news is, this is our tournament which means we call the shots, and we get to add any fun or exciting designs to enhance our experience.
Anyone who is college-aged or older is welcome to judge at our tournament. This includes students in performing arts, students from other colleges, working adults, professors, and other faculty/staff who can benefit from offering feedback to highschool students. Those who sign-up to judge will be expected to be in attendance all day and will likely be selected to judge elimination rounds. There will be a judging workshop offered to all first-time judges, explaining the rules of the competition. Since this is an educational student event, we do not compensate judges for their work. You will, however, be fed a handsome breakfast and lunch. You can also use your work done at the tournament for your resume/portfolio.
Anyone who has competed in MIFA individual events is welcome to join the tab room. This also includes students who participated in previous Spartan Speech tournaments. Those who sign-up to tab will be expected to be in attendance all day and will be fed a handsome breakfast and lunch.
Anyone who is college-aged and older is welcome to run ballots at our tournament. This also includes students who are not college-aged but would like some early tabulation experience. Those who sign-up to run ballots will be expected to be in attendance all day and will be fed a handsome breakfast and lunch.
Anyone who knows MSU's campus is welcome to join the guide staff. This also includes students in performing arts, professors, and other faculty/staff as well as students who participated in previous Spartan Speech tournaments. Those who sign-up to guide will be expected to be in attendance for the preliminary rounds, and will be fed a handsome breakfast and lunch.
Anyone who is looking to recruit students for their club, or interested in manning a Spartan Speech informational booth is welcome to at our tournament. This also includes students in performing arts, professors, and other faculty/staff representing departments. Those who sign-up to man a booth will be expected to be in attendance from round 3 to the start of finals, and will be fed a handsome lunch.
