The 3rd Annual Spartanvitational

The Spartanvitational - February 22nd, 2020

Official Invitation

To register please visit

We would like to cordially invite you and your team to compete in the 3rd Annual Spartanvitational. Our tournament will run in accordance to normal Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association rules for individual events. Please check for reference if you are unfamiliar with such guidelines.

Michigan State's Spartan Speech is a club made up of former MIFA forensicators and speech-lovers, a full group of Michigan State students who once were on your team! Members include alumni from Walled Lake Western, Bloomfield Hills, Portage Northern, Standish-Sterling, Groves, Divine Child, Seaholm, Stevenson, Portage Central, Loy Norrix, Avondale, Skyline and more! We could use all the help we can get to continue to make this tournament a reality. Help us stay involved in speech activities: bring your team, join our tab staff, and enjoy the beautiful campus here in East Lansing, Michigan!

The tournament will take place in Wells Hall, just east of Spartan Stadium.

Wells Hall

East Lansing, MI 4882

The day...

We will run 3 preliminary rounds, a semi-final round, and one final round of 6 contestants who will each receive trophies. Any 7th place finalists will also receive trophies. There will be three sweepstakes divisions with trophies awarded as well. This tournament will be well-equipped with trophies {last years fiasco will not repeat itself}, breakfast and lunch for judges/tabs, and a fun & time-efficient awards ceremony.

The tournament will run rain or shine or sleet or hail due to many monetary commitments, so please plan accordingly. We have allotted a little extra time for rounds due to the need for an extra building, making our tournament a slightly longer day than traditional invitationals.

Schedule of Events

  • 7:00-8:15 Registration

  • 2:30 Semi-Finals

A light breakfast and full lunch will be provided for judges, coaches and tab staff. Please be aware of your own dietary needs and limitations, as we will try to provide for every person. If you have any concerns or food allergies you feel we need to be aware of, please let us know.

Students and competitors will be given more than enough time to purchase food at the Shaw hall OR Phillips hall cafeteria. We will have Spartan Speech members assisting with wayfinding and directions as well as custom-made maps. The previous years we understand that there was confusion in this area, so we will do our best to provide clear instructions and assistance with food. Food purchased in a campus cafeteria will cost roughly $11-12 for an all-you-can-eat buffet. We also ask that all donuts, bagels, chips, and fancy Starbucks drinks brought by or for students remain outside the lecture halls and classrooms. Students are welcome to eat in the hallways, but the Infrastructure and Planning Facilities of Bessey and Wells hall have specifically requested that we do our best to keep food out of the general assembly lecture hall and competition classrooms.

There will be no double-entries at this tournament. Middle school competitors will be competing alongside high schoolers, as we have limited resources in running another tournament. However, we intend to award the top middle level competitor in each category. Still, we hope this does not discourage you from bringing your middle level team for a day of fun on a college campus.

Impromptu quotes will only have been spoken or written by MSU alumni, professors, and associates. Broadcasters will have one round of Michigan State related news. There will be one round of Extemp with critical questions pertaining to Michigan State. We have limited numbers of desktop computers for use in the prep room. We encourage students who feel comfortable prepping with their laptops to bring them. There will be accessible high-speed internet for use.

Individual Affiliates

We are continuing our MSU Individual Affiliate Initiative, where students who do not have forensics IE programs at their school can compete for free. As part of this initiative we encourage students to consider coaching a friend, sibling or cousin from another school, and we hope that you share this information with them. For more information on this initiative we invite you to read more here.

We will also be offering a free workshop for all competitors this year on Friday the 21st; the night before the tournament. All students are welcome to attend and receive hands-on coaching from members of Spartan Speech. This will take place in Room A118 of Wells hall beginning at 7:30pm and ending at 9:30. The sign-up link can be found here.

If your team is considering coming, please at least register as soon as possible so we can prepare to the best of our ability for the number of teams/students coming. Your team has until Wednesday, Feb. 19th at 3 PM to register and add/drop before registration closes. Once this period closes, drops or no-shows will be charged accordingly. Please reference the fees on hirelesmana. Also if there are special circumstances or preclusions as they pertain to students or judges, please let us know immediately by email.

Looking for an affordable overnight stay for your team? The Quality Inn University is only a mile and a half off campus and is offering special rates during this weekend for school groups.

Please make any checks out to Spartan Speech. Email us privately if your team/school needs a W9.

Click here for parking information. If your school is planning to arrive by bus, please email us. Michigan State has one of the most confusing and unfair parking systems of all American universities, so we want to be able to best assist your school's needs and make this a painless part of your day. Busses will likely need to hang out south of campus in the lots near Mt. Hope road. As much as we wanted to contain the tournament to a singular building, the massive amount of entries we anticipate has forced us to reserve another building within 5 minute walking distance for competition.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have, you can reach Sam at

Thank you again for your interest and we can't wait to see you on our wonderful campus!
